Hon'ble Mr. Justice SANJAY VIJAYKUMAR GANGAPURWALA
Chief Justice, High Court of Madras

Born on 24.05.1962. Stood third in the order of merit in LL.B. examination. Started practice in the year 1985 and joined Chambers of advocate Shri. S.N. Loya. Practiced in trial Court, High Court and Debt Recovery Tribunal. Was the advocate for myriad Financial Institutions, many corporate bodies and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University. Also represented Government before Justice Mane Commission. Elevated as an Additional Judge of Bombay High Court on 13.03.2010 and as the Acting Chief Justice of Bombay High Court in December 2022. On 28.05.2023, was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court and assumed office on 29.05.2023.

Extra-curricular activities: Is a keen sportsman. Represented Dr.Babasaheb Ambedkar Marthwada University six times and captained it twice in All India Inter-University Lawn Tennis Tournament. Played Basketball at State level. Was honorary part time lecturer in M.P.Law College since 1991 till date of elevation as Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court

Hon'ble Mr. Justice R. MAHADEVAN
Judge , High Court of Madras

Was born on 10.06.1963 at Chennai. He completed law degree at Madras Law College and enrolled in the year 1989. Practiced in civil, criminal and writ sides with specialization in indirect taxes, customs and Central Excise matters for a period of 25 years. He served as an Additional Government Pleader (Taxes) for the Government of Tamil Nadu, as Additional Central Government Standing Counsel and Senior Panel Counsel for the Government of India at Madras High Court and conducted more than 9000 cases. He got elevated as a judge of the Madras High court in the year 2013.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice M. SUNDAR
Judge, High Court of Madras

Justice M.Sundar was born on 19th July, 1966 in Chennai, he graduated in Law from the Madras Law College, belongs to the first batch of 5 years integrated Law Course and he enrolled as an Advocate in 1989. He practiced primarily in the Madras High Court and had a wide spectrum of practice on the Civil Side. He was standing counsel for TWAD Board, Government of Tamil Nadu between 2003 and 2006. He was sworn in as permanent Judge of this Court on 05.10.2016.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice R. SURESH KUMAR
Judge, High Court of Madras

Born to Sri. C. Ramachandran and Smt. R. Chandrambal at Vallathirakottai Village, Pudukkottai District, in the year 1964. His father was the President of the Village Panchayat for about 40 years. Before him, his grandfather was the Panchayat President for 30 more years. His maternal grandfather was an M.L.C. of the State Legislative Council of the then Princely State of Pudukkotta.

Studied upto 4th standard in Govt. Middle School, Vallathirakottai, from 5th to 8th standard at Sri Gulapathi Balaiya Middle School and from 9th to 12th standard at TELC Higher Secondary School, Pudukkottai. Graduated (B.Sc.) from H.H.The Raja`s College, Pudukkottai, and completed B.L. Degree in the year 1989 at the Madras Law College, presently known as Dr.Ambedkar Govt. Law College, Chennai.

Wife Mrs. S. Rajeswari, granddaughter of a freedom-fighter of Tanjore District and daughter of Mr. S. Kaliyaperumal, Joint Director of Rural Development (Retd.) and Mrs. Premavathi, studied B.L. at Trichy Law College and M.L. at Annamalai University. Having only son S. Surajiv Arul is a school-going boy.

Enrolled as an Advocate in Tamil Nadu Bar Council on 27.09.1989 and joined at the office of Mr. A. Muthukrishnan and had been practising in both Original and Appellate Sides at High Court, and thereafter attached with the Senior Advocate and Former Advocate General of Tamil Nadu Sri. N.R. Chandran, who also belongs to Pudukottai District and was groomed under him in Writ side matters with the specialization of academic and service subjects. He has been in the practice for 27 years till elevation, at the High Court of Madras as well as in the Central and State Administrative Tribunals. Practised in the areas of Civil, Constitutional and Writ, particularly in the field of academic and service matters.

Was the Standing Counsel for TNPSC from October, 2001 to October, 2006 and the Counsel for the Registry of Madras High Court from July 2009 upto his elevation; appointed as Senior Panel Counsel by the Ministry of Law & Justice, Govt, of India (2010-2014) and represented cases of various departments of the Central Govt, and served as the Govt. Counsel for Union of India to deal with the service matters at Central Administrative Tribunal, Madras Bench between 2010 and 2014. Also served as the Standing Counsel for Indian Maritime University, a Central University, from the year 2009 upto 2014. From 2012 to Jan.2016, was the Counsel for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), and was also appointed as Standing Counsel for Annamalai University in October 2013 and served as such till his elevation.

When he was the Standing Counsel for TNPSC in 2004, he appeared along with the renowned Senior Counsel Mr. P.P. Rao before the Honble Supreme Court of India in respect of Civil Judges Recruitment issue. As Senior Central Govt. Counsel, he appeared for Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) in the famous Koodangulam Nuclear Power Project case. Apart from the Governmental and Quasi Governmental organizations, he had been the Counsel for many numbers of academic institutions such as Engineering colleges, B.Ed. colleges, Teacher Training Institutes, Polytechnics and also some of the Colleges of Medical and Dentistry besides the Counsel for Matriculation Schools.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice S.M. SUBRAMANIAM
Judge, High Court of Madras

Mr.S.M.Subramaniam was born on 31.05.1965, completed his Law Degree in the year 1991 and enrolled as an Advocate in the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu on 25.09.1991. He worked under Senior Counsel Mr.K.Duraisamy for about 1 year and established an independent office from December 1992. He appeared in numerous cases associated with varied branches of law, which encompasses Writs, Civil Appeals, Civil Suits and in few criminal cases. He has specialised in the field of service law and was representing various Government Officials Associations.

The important cases argued by him are:

1.In the year 2004, he appeared in the case of ESMA & TESMA wherein 2 lakh Government Employees were terminated from service.

2.Appeared in the case of termination of 10,000 saalai paniyaalargal from the Highways Department.

3.Appeared in a case representing large number of State Government Pensioners retired between 1960 & 1988 in which around 1,50,000 aged state government pensioners received pension and arrears.

4.His maiden appearance before the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India was in the year September 1995 in the case of Kaliyaperumal Vs. Government Officials Union representing the respondent.


He is supported by his wife Mrs.Sasikala Subramaniam, Advocate & only daughter Ms.Swadhi Subramaniam, studying final year law course at the School of Excellence in Law in Chennai..

Hon'ble Mr. Justice C.V. KARTHIKEYAN
Judge, High Court of Madras

Born on 14th December 1964 as sixth generation in a family of Lawyers and Judges to Sri C.V. SIMHARAJA SASTRI and Smt. SARASWATHY S. SASTRI.

Did initial schooling at St. JOSEPH`S PRESENTATION CONVENT, Royapuram, Chennai, and later completed High School from St. MARY`S HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL, Armenian Street, Chennai and Higher Secondary from HINDU SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL, Triplicane, Chennai. Graduated in B.Sc. (Statistics) from MADRAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE, Tambaram, Chennai and in B.L. from Dr. AMBEDKAR LAW COLLEGE, Chennai. Later also completed M.L. from ANNAMALAI UNVERSITY and M.A. from MADURAI KAMARAJ UNIVERSITY.

Enrolled as Advocate on 23rd August 1989 and joined the office of late Sri V.S. SUBRAHMANYAN, Advocate and Part-Time Professor, Madras Law College. Also established commendable individual practice.


Selected as District Judge in Tamil Nadu State Judicial Service and joined service on 6th June 2005 as Trainee District Judge at Ramanathapuram. Served as II Additional District Judge (CBI Cases), Madurai, Additional and Principal Labour Court Judge at Vellore, Director, Tamil Nadu State Judicial Academy, Registrar (Vigilance), Madras High Court and finally as Chief Judge, Puducherry, during which period also served intermittently as Member Secretary, Puducherry Legal Services Authority.

Hon'ble Mr. Justice A.D. JAGADISH CHANDIRA
Judge, High Court of Madras

Mr.Justice A.D.Jagadish Chandira, was born on 15.02.1966 in Virapandiapatnam Village in Thoothukudi District. His father Late Prof. Dasan Fernando was the Vice Principal and Head of the Department of Chemistry in Aditanar College of Arts and Science, Tiruchendur. Mother Mrs.Metilda Dasan was a Home Maker, who had taken the role of heading the family after the demise of his father in his early ages. His wife Mrs. Chiara Jagadish had completed her M.A (Public Administration) and M.Sc (Counselling and Guidance), however had chosen to be a Home Maker.

Mr. Justice A.D. Jagadish Chandira though initially got admitted in Madurai Law College later transferred and completed his Law Degree at Dr.Ambedkar Govt. Law College, Chennai and enrolled as an Advocate in the year 1989. Initially he had trained himself with M/s. King and Partridge as Junior Advocate (1989-91) and thereafter practised as Junior Advocate in the office of Mr.P.Peppin Fernando, in both the offices he had appeared in the Civil cases and later joined the office of his maternal uncle Shri.G.R.Edmund and practiced extensively in Criminal sides both in trial and appellate sides.

He had started his individual practice in the year 1997 and had practiced in both trial and appellate sides in Civil, Criminal matters, before Consumer and other Commissions and also in Writ Jurisdictions. He served as an Additional Public Prosecutor of the Madras High Court during the year 2010 and this apart he has served as Panel Counsel to the State Human Rights Commission and also as the Honorary Legal Advisor to the Tamil Nadu State Women's Commission, Chennai. He was a Honorary Associate Editor of the Law Journal-Chennai Law Times (Criminal).

He was appointed as a Amicus Curiae to assist the Court in the matter of Katta Panchayat in the year 2016.
